CHICAGO - House Democrats attending the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago have been advised not to book hotel accommodations under their own names due to safety concerns, as thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to gather in the city. Congressional security officials issued this guidance to prevent potential risks to lawmakers, according to a report from Axios.

The advisory, issued by the House sergeant-at-arms, specifically instructs Democratic lawmakers to avoid engaging with protesters if confronted and to report any incidents to Capitol Police. The security concerns arise from a series of disruptive protests by pro-Palestinian supporters following the Israel-Hamas conflict that began last year. The ongoing tensions have heightened fears among some Democratic members of Congress about the possibility of violence during the convention.

According to the report, some hotels have received anonymous calls requesting information about specific individuals, which has added to the concern among lawmakers. One unnamed House Democrat expressed significant worry about the safety of their colleagues and themselves. Another senior House Democrat indicated that they were advised to avoid certain areas due to the potential for violence.

The Democratic National Convention is expected to attract tens of thousands of demonstrators, many of whom are protesting Israel's military actions in Gaza. In response to these concerns, DNC organizers have assured attendees that the convention will be secure. A welcome packet sent to congressional Democrats highlighted that the Secret Service, which is overseeing security for the event, has coordinated with various law enforcement agencies, including the Capitol Police and Chicago Police Department. The Secret Service has reportedly provided over 400 hours of specialized training to officers in preparation for the event.

The convention, scheduled to begin on Monday and conclude on Thursday, will culminate with Vice President Kamala Harris receiving the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
