NATCHEZ — A violent domestic dispute led to the death of one man during the early morning hours of Sunday.

Calvin Carter was shot and killed by his stepson after Carter allegedly beat and kidnapped his estranged wife, Tawana Jones of Natchez.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call shortly after midnight on Sunday from E911 Dispatch, saying it had taken a call from a “frantic female” who was crying and screaming for help.

The dispatcher told deputies the woman kept repeating an address on Carmel Church Road before the line was disconnected. Dispatchers said a disturbance could be heard in the background of the call.

Adams County Sheriff’s deputies immediately headed to that address.

At the same time, E911 Dispatch also received calls from Randrell Jones, Tawana Jones’ son, regarding the incident. Randrell Jones told dispatchers that an altercation was going on between his mother and his stepfather, Calvin Carter. Randrell Jones told dispatchers that Carter had a gun and had taken Tawana from the Carmel Church Road address. Randrell Jones said he was trying to follow them down U.S. 61 South.

The Sheriff’s Office said Randrell Jones stayed in contact with E911 Dispatch and reported Carter had taken Jones down Shieldsboro Road.

“Moments later, E911 Dispatch advised responding deputies that multiple gunshots could be heard in the background of the call,” said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.

Within minutes, Adams County deputies arrived and advised dispatch to send Emergency Medical Services for a gunshot victim.

Deputies then secured the scene and called for investigators to respond.

Randrell Jones was detained for investigation, while Carter and Tawana Jones were transported to Merit Health Natchez for treatment.

Tawana Jones suffered three broken ribs, a ruptured eardrum, multiple bruises, and needed stitches to close several wounds.

Adams County Investigators arrived and began to process the scenes, collect evidence, and interview witnesses, the sheriff said.

“Investigators learned that around midnight, Carter had driven his vehicle to Carmel Church Road, where his estranged wife was spending the night. Investigators discovered evidence that shows Carter parking his vehicle at a locked gate and climbing over the property’s fence.” according to the sheriff’s office press release.

Witnesses stated that Carter was able to make entry into the residence, where he began to assault Tawana and destroy the interior of the home.

Witnesses stated that Carter forced Tawana to gather a few possessions before forcing her to leave with him.

According to the press release, a short time later, Carter can be seen returning to his vehicle along with Tawana and again climbing over the fence due to the locked gate.

“Crime scene investigation at both locations supported the statements of Tawana, Randrell and the witnesses,” Sheriff Patten said.

He said the crime scene on Shieldsboro Road was located in a remote area of southwest Adams County that is poorly lit and has little to no residences.

Carter succumbed to his injuries while at Merit Health in

Natchez. Sheriff Patten said Tawana Jones suffered cuts, bruises, and broken bones from the altercation. She has since been released from Merit Health Natchez.

The sheriff said no arrests have been made yet, but the investigation “is far from complete.”
