Historic Natchez Foundation 50th anniversary: The Guest House

NATCHEZ — The Guest House Historic Inn on Franklin Street was originally constructed circa 1840 as a one-and-a-half-story Greek Revival townhouse. It was expanded in 1902 with an entire second floor and extensive galleries to become the Elks Lodge. In 1982, Jack Pool and Pool Investments rehabilitated the building into a small luxury inn. White paint that had been applied to the exterior was stripped with restoration chemicals and the galleries were restored. The interior was converted to 17 guest rooms, the swimming pool in the courtyard was filled, and a restaurant added in its place. The inn became part of the Eola Hotel until the properties came under separate ownership. David Peabody of Peabody Design was the architect and Roy Sather was the contractor on the project. The Historic Natchez Foundation provided design advice and completed the historic tax credit application for the rehabilitation. These pictures are part of a series of before and after photographs that will run in The Natchez Democrat every Wednesday during 2024 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Historic Natchez Foundation.
