NBA To Add 4-Point Line? Former Player Makes Bold Prediction

The NBA has gone through numerous changes over the years, and one of the most significant was the introduction of the three-point line in the 1979-80 season. Now, there’s growing speculation about the potential for an even bigger change: the introduction of a four-point line.

This idea gained traction after the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) introduced a four-point line positioned 27 feet (8.22 meters) from the rim. For comparison, the current NBA three-point line is 22 feet in the corners and 23 feet, 9 inches elsewhere.

Other leagues, such as the WNBA and international competitions, have three-point lines set at 20 feet, 6 inches, while the NCAA men’s line is 20 feet, 9 inches, and the women’s and high school lines are 19 feet, 9 inches.

Patrick Beverley recently discussed the idea of the NBA experimenting with a four-point line on his podcast, suggesting the league might consider testing it in the future. Although nothing is imminent, Beverley believes the NBA could at least try it out to gauge the reaction of both fans and players.

Some fans have begun speculating about how long it might take for the four-point shot to reach the NBA, especially since many players are already hitting deep shots beyond the current three-point line. Steph Curry, who is famous for his long-range shooting, is often viewed as the kind of player who could excel if the four-point shot were introduced.

However, despite being a perfect example of someone who could benefit, Curry is not in favor of the idea. “It might benefit me if there was a 4-point line because I probably already shoot a bunch of them from well behind the three-point line,” Curry said.

However, he voiced concerns about the potential impact on the game, adding, “I feel like it would change too much of the geometry of the game, and it would encourage a lot of people that don’t know how to shoot to go and shoot even further.”

While Curry’s opposition shows that the concept has its critics, the NBA has shown a willingness to evolve over time. If the league were to consider the four-point shot, it might begin by testing it during preseason games or in the In-Season Tournament. If successful, it could eventually make its way to regular-season games.

For now, the NBA continues to evolve, and though a four-point line might not be imminent, it’s an intriguing possibility that could shape the future of basketball.
