Houston Rockets Wing ‘Seriously Considering’ Walking Away From Game

Houston Rockets wing AJ Griffin is reportedly contemplating a significant career decision, as he is “seriously considering” stepping away from the NBA.

According to Shams Charania and Kelly Iko of The Athletic, Griffin and the Rockets are said to be preparing for his potential departure from basketball.

Griffin, the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, showed promise during his rookie campaign with the Atlanta Hawks.

    A Promising Start in Atlanta

Over 72 games, Griffin averaged 8.9 points per game, shooting an efficient 46.5% from the field, including 39% from beyond the arc. His ability to stretch the floor and contribute as a versatile scorer made him a valuable piece in Atlanta’s rotation.

However, Griffin’s second season was marred by leg and ankle injuries, as well as personal matters, limiting him to just 20 appearances. During those limited minutes, his performance dropped to just 2.4 points per game on 29.0% shooting.

After being traded to the Rockets this past June in a three-team deal that also involved the Miami Heat, Griffin was expected to find a fresh start in Houston. The Rockets had long been interested in the 21-year-old and were hopeful that he could rediscover the form that made him a first-round pick and a standout at Duke, where he was an ACC All-Freshman selection.

The young forward was set to join a developing Rockets team featuring talent like Alperen Şengün, Jalen Green, and Jabari Smith Jr., but it appears his time in Houston could be cut short before it truly begins.

    Future Uncertainty with the Rockets

Despite having a guaranteed $3.89 million contract for the 2024-25 season, the Rockets now face uncertainty about Griffin’s future. They have until the end of October to exercise their team option for the 2025-26 season, worth $5.97 million, but given the latest reports, it seems unlikely the option will be picked up.

Griffin’s decision to consider leaving the sport is surprising, especially given his pedigree. As the son of former NBA player and current coach Adrian Griffin, basketball has always been a significant part of his life.

However, with injuries and other factors playing a role in his recent struggles, Griffin may be contemplating his next steps away from the court. If he does choose to walk away, it would bring an unexpected and early conclusion to a once-promising career.
