Los Angeles Lakers Linked To New Bold Trade Targets: How Close Is A Deal?

    By Jake Rogers,

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly monitoring two intriguing trade targets to bolster their roster for the upcoming NBA season: Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogdon.

According to a report by Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus on September 10, these two players could be potential fits for the Lakers if they become available before the trade deadline.

Marcus Smart: A Defensive Upgrade for the Lakers?

Pincus speculates that Marcus Smart could potentially hit the trade market if the Memphis Grizzlies encounter challenges this season. The Grizzlies are heavily invested in their young core, including Desmond Bane and Ja Morant, and could look to move Smart depending on their roster needs and salary cap constraints.

For the Lakers, adding Smart would significantly enhance their defensive presence in the backcourt. Smart’s tenacity, physicality, and experience in high-pressure playoff situations could provide the kind of leadership and defensive boost the Lakers need as they aim for another deep postseason run.

Malcolm Brogdon: Sharpshooting and Short-Term Flexibility

Another name being floated is Malcolm Brogdon, who was recently traded to the Washington Wizards. Brogdon’s future in Washington is uncertain, and there’s speculation that the Wizards, in full rebuild mode, could flip him in a trade before the season’s end.

Brogdon’s ability to shoot 39.1% from beyond the arc over his career makes him a valuable asset for a Lakers team looking to improve its perimeter shooting. Additionally, with Brogdon on a short-term deal, the Lakers wouldn’t have to commit long-term cap space, making him an attractive option for a mid-season upgrade.

    Brogdon’s Trade Status Unclear

While Brogdon’s future with the Wizards is uncertain, The Athletic’s Josh Robbins has reported that Brogdon is expected to start the season with Washington. However, it’s possible he could still be traded before the February deadline, especially if he remains healthy and a contending team seeks additional guard depth.

The Lakers, who have a history of adding impactful veterans, could make a move if the opportunity arises. Both Smart and Brogdon would bring valuable skills to Los Angeles, but whether they become available will largely depend on the performance and direction of their current teams.
