Joel Embiid’s Future in Philly: Will the 76ers Secure Another Extension?

    By Jake Rogers,

The Philadelphia 76ers made a major move this NBA offseason by securing one of their rising stars, Tyrese Maxey, with his first max contract, after drafting him out of the University of Kentucky in 2020.

In addition to locking in Maxey, the Sixers also brought in former Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George, signing him to a max deal as well.

Now, the attention shifts to Joel Embiid, who is eligible for a contract extension once again this offseason.

ESPN Insider Bobby Marks recently offered some insight into what might happen next for the reigning MVP and Sixers franchise cornerstone.

“I would expect a deal to get done with Embiid in the near future here. I certainly think it will be at max money.”

Even before Marks’ update, it was widely expected that the Sixers and Embiid would work toward a significant extension during the summer.

Embiid’s participation in the Paris Olympics was a primary focus, but with a gold medal now added to his accolades, attention could turn toward extending his tenure in Philadelphia.

Embiid’s current contract began during the 2023-2024 season, with him earning over $47 million in the first year. Next season, his salary will climb to more than $51 million, per Spotrac. The final guaranteed year of his current deal is 2025-2026, after which Embiid holds a nearly $60 million player option for the 2026 offseason.

However, many, including Marks, believe that Embiid may opt for a new deal before then.

Committing to another massive contract for Embiid certainly comes with risks, particularly given his history with injuries. Yet, given his performance and impact, it seems a gamble worth taking.

At 30 years old, Embiid remains one of the league’s most dominant two-way players, firmly in his prime.

Two seasons ago, Embiid claimed the NBA MVP title, leading the league in scoring with an average of 33 points per game on 55 percent shooting. While he wasn’t in the spotlight for major awards last season, he still delivered MVP-level numbers, averaging 35 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists per game.

Though concerns about Joel Embiid’s durability persist, particularly regarding his performance in the playoffs, his achievements and stature make him indispensable to the Sixers.

It seems only a matter of time before the Philadelphia 76ers solidify his future with another long-term deal, ensuring he remains the face of the franchise for years to come.
