Former Sports Illustrated writer Andrew Sharp shared his candid thoughts on the Dallas Mavericks’ recent decision to sign Klay Thompson, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors and renowned for his catch-and-shoot ability.

On his podcast, “Greatest of All Talk,” with co-host Ben Golliver, Sharp expressed skepticism about Thompson’s fit in Dallas, arguing that the Mavericks can’t simply use him as a replacement for Tim Hardaway Jr.

He also voiced concerns that Jason Kidd is likely to play Thompson more than 20 minutes per game, a move Sharp strongly questioned.

“If they are playing Klay, that’s probably bad news for the Mavs, and if they aren’t playing Klay, then maybe Klay is a problem. Hard to imagine that guy being a part of the best Mavericks lineups.”

Sharp further highlighted the decline in Thompson’s defensive performance, pointing out that his diminished athleticism has hurt his lateral movement, which makes it hard to envision him being a key part of the Mavericks’ best lineups.

While his take on Thompson’s defense is fair, Sharp’s assertion that Thompson has been “so bad” offensively seems exaggerated, especially considering what the veteran shooter could contribute in a new system surrounded by fresh talent.

This isn’t to downplay the success of the Warriors’ dynasty, which, with four championships, will be remembered for years in NBA history. But many of Golden State’s core players have passed their peak.

On the other hand, Dallas boasts a mix of youth, playoff experience, and a strong backcourt led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

While Klay Thompson might not be the dominant force he once was, there’s still plenty of potential for him to be a key contributor in the Mavericks’ offense, even if his role shifts from what he’s been used to in the past.
