The Atlanta Hawks have made it clear that Trae Young is their franchise cornerstone, and if they plan to continue building around their star point guard, it’s time to think about finding an NBA All-Star-caliber player to pair with him.

Given that their next three drafts are controlled by the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta can’t rely on draft picks to bolster their roster. Instead, they need to explore the trade market for established talent to help them contend now.

One player who should be on the Hawks’ radar is Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns.

The 28-year-old forward-center hybrid brings a unique skill set that could make him a perfect fit alongside Trae Young. Towns’ ability to stretch the floor with his three-point shooting, coupled with his rebounding and playmaking abilities, would offer the Hawks a versatile weapon.

Towns averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists last season while shooting an impressive 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. His shooting proficiency could unlock more space for Trae Young to operate, making the Hawks’ offense even more dangerous.

Additionally, Towns’ passing ability allows him to be a secondary offensive hub, providing another playmaker when Young is pressured or double-teamed.

    How Towns Fits in Atlanta

The Hawks could utilize Towns in various lineup configurations. For instance, he could slot between young forward Jalen Johnson and defensive stalwart Clint Capela in bigger lineups, or serve as a floor-spacing center in a more spread-out offensive scheme.

His ability to stretch defenses with his shooting makes him an ideal candidate for pick-and-pop situations with Young, a devastating combination for opposing teams to defend.

Defensively, pairing Towns with Capela could also work to Atlanta’s advantage. While Towns has been criticized for his defense, playing alongside Capela could help cover some of his deficiencies in that area, allowing the Hawks to maintain a strong presence in the paint.

Why the Atlanta Hawks Need to Make a Move Now

With the Hawks’ draft future tied to the Spurs, they don’t have the luxury of waiting to build through young prospects. Trae Young is already in his prime, and Atlanta needs to capitalize on this window to contend.

Trading for a player like Towns would signal that the Hawks are serious about building a contender around Young and committed to making bold moves to rise in the Eastern Conference.

Towns offers the offensive firepower and versatility the Hawks need to elevate their play and challenge the top teams in the East. His ability to complement Young while also serving as a dynamic presence in his own right makes him a prime target for Atlanta to consider.

If the Atlanta Hawks want to build a sustainable contender around Trae Young, adding an All-Star like Karl-Anthony Towns could be the move that puts them over the top. His unique blend of skills would not only elevate their offense but also give them the firepower they need to compete with the NBA’s elite teams.

With their draft capital limited, the time to act is now.
