The 2023-24 NBA season was a tough one for the Memphis Grizzlies. They dealt with a ridiculous number of injuries, which led to them unexpectedly landing a top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and a star to watch in the Summer League.
With the No. 9 overall pick in the draft, the Memphis Grizzlies selected Purdue big man, Zach Edey . The two-time defending National Player of the Year had some widespread analysis about where he could land in the draft.
Some evaluators don’t believe that his skills will translate to the next level. His mobility and movement defensively will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
Offensively, can he expand his range? He was an elite finish when posting up, which leads some evaluators to believe that he can figure it out in the NBA. One elite skill is enough to get players on the court.

As arguably the most polarizing prospect in the 2024 draft class, Summer League in Las Vegas will give fans another chance to see him play. In the opinion of Kelvin Pelton of ESPN , Edey is the top player to watch on the Memphis Grizzlies.
“It’s possible no rookie will play a more important role on a competitive team than Edey, who joins a Grizzlies team that won 50-plus games in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 before an injury-plagued season landed it in the lottery.
Not only does Edey fill an important need for Memphis at center, he’s ready to contribute now as a four-year collegian who won a pair of Naismith trophies as the nation’s best player.
Edey has already shown his skills with 14 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks and a game-tying tip-in during his debut at the Salt Lake City Summer League,” Pelton wrote .

Will we see more of the same dominance in Las Vegas as Salt Lake City? Edey will be one of the players people keep a close eye on for several reasons.
One of them is because you can’t miss him given his towering size, standing 7’4”. As a top pick in the draft, people will want to see how he has progressed and developed since Purdue’s season ended in the Championship Game against UConn.
The Memphis Grizzlies were on the path to contention before injuries derailed them last season. The addition of Edey could help get them over the hump, providing a presence on the interior they needed.
While Summer League performances don’t hold too much weight, as they are exhibitions, seeing Edey dominate would be a good sign of things to go come for the Memphis Grizzlies.
