Warriors, Stephen Curry Want to Continue Partnership

The 2024 NBA offseason has been a tough one for the Golden State Warriors. It signaled the end of an era, as their Big 3 of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green is no more.

Thompson departed in free agency, landing with the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal via a massive sign-and-trade. It certainly isn’t the way anyone hoped his tenure with the franchise would end.

It came down to Thompson feeling like he wasn’t being respected by the franchise and wanting a change. That is something that the Warriors are looking to avoid with Stephen Curry.

Curry has made it clear that he would like to play his career with a single franchise. That is a rare feat in the NBA nowadays, but we have seen some all-time greats recently such as Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki who accomplished the feat.

From the sounds of it, the feeling is mutual. The Warriors want to keep Curry around for the duration of his career, as well. There are other things the franchise is focusing on right now, but a long-term extension for the future Hall of Famer is on their to-do list.

“That guy can get whatever he wants,” Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said in a news conference Friday via ESPN. “It’s been a sprint here getting through the draft and free agency and summer league, but all of that will get figured out. Steph, I think I can say pretty confidently, that he will be a Warrior for life.”

Changes had to be made by the Warriors after their performance in the 2023-24 NBA season. They finished in 10th place in the Western Conference, losing in the NBA Play-In Tournament to the Sacramento Kings.

With the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs on the rise, and a bounce back expected from the Memphis Grizzlies, the Warriors had to adjust to keep up in the Western Conference.

One thing that won’t be changing is their starting point guard. That spot will belong to Stephen Curry as long as he wants it, as both parties want him to end his career with the franchise he started it with.
