Puk if Arizona took a lead, the manager told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. As such, Lovullo went with Sewald in a high-leverage situation -- two on and one out in the seventh inning. He retired the first batter faced before giving up a three-run home run to Will Smith. An inning later, Shohei Ohtani took him deep. That second blast turned out to be the difference maker, as Arizona got within one with a four-run ninth inning. It was the third consecutive outing that Sewald has allowed runs.

Wells hit a two-run shot in a three-run third off Erick Fedde (8-8) to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. He connected again later off Riley O’Brien for a 6-3 lead. It was Wells’ first career multihomer game and the rookie catcher is hitting .346 (28 for 81) with five homers and 21 RBIs in 20 games as New York’s cleanup hitter protecting Aaron Judge mostly when the Yankees face right-handed starters. “I’m having a lot of fun with it,” Wells said of hitting behind Judge. “I’m accepting it and embracing the challenge.”

Ohtani blasted his 42nd homer off Corbin Burnes (12-7) and stole his 41st and 42nd bases in pursuit of becoming the first major leaguer in history with 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a season. He has 14 stolen bases in August, the most by a Dodger in a month since his manager Roberts had 15 in March and April in 2004.
