Zapp, Morris Day speak on 614 Funk Fest performances

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — The Columbus Commons was home to the second annual 614-Funk Fest tonight.

The event highlights the funk music genre, including one group who performed who are native to Ohio and known for their impact on funk music. The group, Zapp, was joined by artists like Morris Day who are grateful this festival showcases artists who were instrumental in the devolvement of funk music.

“So we’re just glad that Columbus thought of us, you know to come in and help make the party happen,” Day said.

Tonight was a culmination of years of playing the iconic genre of funk music. Zapp performed tonight and helped pioneer the genre in the 1970s and ’80s, starting out in Dayton. Group member Zapp Troutman said he’s glad to be back.

“It’s beautiful to come home, to play at home,” Troutman said. “My brother and I are in our 60s now, life is good. They really enjoyed the show.”

Troutman said this evening’s performance is Zapp’s second year in a row at the 614 Funk Fest. The feeling of celebration and acknowledgement of this music was very top of mind for these artists, who said they just wanted to give the crowd of fans a great show.

“It always feels the same to have people anticipating, loving what you do and waiting on you to come and rip it up,” Day said. “We’re glad to be here, and we (want what) they want. We’re gonna give them the pimp suits and we’re gonna bring the funk, you know, and that’s what they got us here for so that’s what we’re gonna do.”
