COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — Wednesday morning marked the first day students could move in to residence halls at the Ohio State University.

Over the next four days, OSU is about to get a lot busier after an 8:30 a.m. start on Wednesday. More than 14,000 students have begun moving in to their dorms for the fall semester. Cart loads full of clothes, bedding, and all the dorm necessities are making its way to their new home for the next year.

“We started getting ready for moving day probably about three weeks ago,” said Tanya Schooley, a mother to a sophomore. “And so we use all of our IKEA bags to pack everything in. I ordered stuff and we put it all in the dining room as our staging area.”

Schooley and her husband loaded up their sprinter van and traveled all the way from Illinois, ready to move in their son, Gavin, for his sophomore year. “I like the Midwest area. And then sports was a big moving point and then they have great academics so it kind of rounded itself out,” said Gavin.

Nervous, anxious and excitement are all words that can describe the move in process. Families are showing up with full cars of items. To help move the process along, there are plenty of University staff and upperclassmen that help. Whether you’re a freshman or sophomore, everyone we spoke with is excited for the Fall semester to begin.

“I’m really excited about all the activities they have set up, especially the wipe out that they have in a few days. I think that’ll be super funny. Just getting to know everyone and meeting new people,” said incoming freshman Melody Nikkhoo.

In true parent fashion, those we spoke with said they made sure to have the safety talk with their college student. “Especially my grandma. She was telling me she’s like, don’t go out at night, don’t do your laundry at night and I’m like, it’s in the building, so nothing’s going to happen,” said Nikkhoo.

The students aren’t the only ones excited to begin the next chapter of their lives, their parents are too. “I think it’s a fun opportunity for them to be on their own and kind of be with a lot of, you know, other 20 somethings, it’s a special time in their lives. When I go home, then I get a little sad,” said Schooley.

A spokesperson with the university says that it’s anticipated that the incoming freshman class could be larger than in previous years.
