Man in Sheetz shootout that killed Youngstown State student receives sentence

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – A man convicted on nine felony charges in the 2022 murder of a Youngstown State University student learned his fate in court.

Keimariyon Ross, 20, was found guilty in July on two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of felonious assault and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle in the aftermath of the death of 21-year-old Kevin Sobnosky. On Thursday, a Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge sentenced Ross to 32 years to life in prison.

Ross was among a group of individuals involved in a confrontation with another group of individuals on Oct. 30, 2022, at a Sheetz gas station on North Cassady Avenue near John Glenn International Airport. The incident led to a shootout, in which Ross fired several rounds about 3:50 a.m.

Caught in the crossfire was Sobnosky, 21, who was riding in a vehicle with three others near the shootout before being struck by gunfire . He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced dead just over 12 hours later.

Police originally had as many as 12 persons of interest after reviewing video footage and collecting evidence, which included 20 shell casings at the scene.

A second suspect in the shooting, Tyyan Sullivan, was sentenced to 9-10½ years in prison, two concurrent sentences of 3-4½ years for felonious assault and two 3-year-gun specification sentences to run consecutively.

Tommie Wilkerson Jr. was indicted on four counts of felonious assault . His trial, which began in January, has yet to conclude.
