COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A man was charged with felonious assault Monday after a shooting on the east side of Columbus that left a two-year-old boy hospitalized in July.

Xavior McGrapth, 21, was charged for the July 7 shooting , Columbus police said. The alleged shooter is currently in the Franklin County Jail for an unrelated incident.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9 p.m. that night on the 4000 block of Carlton avenue. Columbus police said at the time that the shooting happened as the boy was outside with his mother when a car drove by and fired shots. The suspect immediately fled the scene, according to police.

“You obviously know your involvement here,” Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said to the suspects in July. “You might not have intended to shoot a two-year-old, but you did shoot a two-year-old. We’re asking you to do the right thing — call and turn yourself in. Our detectives will gladly come and speak with you and figure out the story. But do the right thing. This is a two-year-old little boy who did not deserve this for anything.”

Due to the severity of the child’s injuries, police said the homicide unit is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Columbus Police Detective Camp-Donovan at 614-645-2557, the homicide unit at 614-645-4730, or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
