POWELL, Ohio ( WCMH ) — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is mourning a “cherished ambassador” today as zookeepers announced the death of harbor seal Hillie on Thursday.

Hillie, 9, joined the Columbus Zoo in May 2020, quickly settling into stardom in Adventure Cove with her “spirited personality.” Among other talents, Hillie was known for her confident galumphing, the term for how harbor seals move on land by “hopping” on their stomachs.

“She was the first to boldly galumph down the halls of her indoor habitat, leaving a trail of laughter and admiration behind her,” Zoo representatives said in a statement. “With her slobbery grin and playful antics, Hillie helped place millions of smiles on the faces of zoo guests.”

In her four years in Columbus, Hillie befriended guests, fellow seals and sea lions, and especially her trainers. Her talent for building connections spanned species, once even playing with cheetah dog Cash when he walked through Adventure Cove, following him along the glass and rolling on her side to “play” with the pup.

Zoo representatives said her cause of death is currently unknown as zoo staff await the results of a full autopsy. All other seals are being closely monitored, and the Zoo said they are all healthy.

“Hillie touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” Zoo representatives said. “As we honor Hillie’s memory, we take solace in the joy she brought to Adventure Cove, the awareness she raised for harbor seals and the lasting bonds she helped create.”
