Marion police announced the arrest was made after staff at Grant Middle School were alerted that a student was in possession of an object that appeared to be a firearm. It was confirmed to be a handgun by the school’s resource officer, who took the weapon without incident.

The student was arrested for illegal possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and carrying a concealed weapon. Marion police said they are investigating how the gun came into the child’s possession.
