COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — A 25-year-old man is wanted by police in connection to a fatal shooting Monday in northeast Columbus.

Police on Wednesday announced that Deontae D’Quel Daniel is charged with murder in the shooting death of 28-year-old Cordell Tatney on Cleveland Avenue. Police said Tatney was visiting someone and that two children under the age of two were inside the apartment when Daniel arrived and allegedly shot Tatney.

CPD’s investigation alleges Daniel knew children would be inside the apartment when the shooting took place and that he was familiar with the location. Police ask anyone who knows Daniel’s whereabouts to call 911 or 614-645-4221. The suspect has a distinct neck tattoo with a red number 28 with a broken heart design.

The shooting was reported at approximately 2:45 p.m. Monday in the 4200 block of Cleveland Avenue, where arriving officers found Tatney suffering from a gunshot wound. Medical staff pronounced him dead at 4:02 p.m. Police said Daniel fled the scene in a black Honda with a temporary tag.

The kind of anger that brings about murder is all too common. The problem isn't weapons. The problem is we don't teach self control to kids anymore. It's OK for kids to have tantrums in public, and parents just stand there. My parents felt if I wasn't too good to embarrass them in public, they weren't too good to embarrass me. This young man will likely spend many many years doing hard time, or maybe face a lethal injection. So sad. Two lives ruined because no one taught this kid self control.
