Funniest moments from Ohio State’s press conference ahead of game vs. Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — While it was business as usual for head coach Ryan Day ahead of Ohio State’s Big Ten contest against Iowa , the Buckeyes coordinators brought the comedy with them on Tuesday during the team’s weekly press conference.

We learned a bit about Jim Knowles’ childhood and (possibly) the real reason why Chip Kelly wanted to be in the press box instead of on the field during games.

Here are three of the funniest moments that elicited laughter from the media on Tuesday.

Chip Kelly reveals what he likes most about being OC

Before Chip Kelly was hired at Ohio State earlier this year , he was the head coach at UCLA, where he went 35-34 in his six seasons with the Bruins. Four games into his new job as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator, Kelly has orchestrated a unit that’s already put up 195 points.

But Kelly on Tuesday may have revealed the real advantage of being a coordinator instead of the main guy in charge.

“You can go to the bathroom between series if you have to,” Kelly said. “That’s the only difference, I think. It’s always kinda tough on the sideline to say, ‘hey, I’m gonna leave.’ But there’s a bathroom upstairs by the booth.”

Knowles on making halftime adjustments: “What the hell?”

While the Ohio State defense hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game so far this season, it’s no secret that coordinator Jim Knowles is frustrated about some of the slow starts the Buckeyes have had. Against Michigan State, OSU didn’t force a punt until late in the second quarter.

Knowles was asked how he balances preparing his unit for what he sees on film with the adjustments he ends up having to make at halftime.

“They’re like two completely different processes. They really are,” Knowles said. “The craziest thing about our profession is you can work on things all week and show up at the game and they’re not there. And you’re like, ‘What the hell?’ You know?”

To Knowles’ credit, the halftime adjustments seem to be working. Ohio State’s defense is giving up an average of just 55 yards per second half, allowing just 60 against the Spartans last week.

Knowles: “I got more than nitpicked. I got nitwhacked.”

Knowles is in his third season as a member of the Ohio State coaching staff. So he’s used to high expectations. But he also doesn’t need to be reminded that his unit is leading the nation in something, like average points allowed (6.8) this season.

“That’s two guys that said something about leading the nation,” Knowles said with a smirk. “Both of you guys get out. It’s rat poison.”

The Philadelphia native was then asked if he’s ever been nitpicked as much as he has been at Ohio State.

“My father was pretty tough. He’s a Philly cop,” Knowles said. “I got more than nitpicked. I got nitwhacked. So I’m used to it.”
