COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — It’s October, which means cold and flu season is creeping up on us.

This is why a local healthcare system is doing its part to keep the community members healthy, no matter their ability to pay.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center held a no-cost flu shot clinic at its Healthy Community Center on the city’s Near East Side on Wednesday.

The facility opened earlier this year and acts as a hub to promote healthier lifestyles through workshops, health screenings, and educational programming.

Providers said events like the clinic further the center’s mission of meeting the needs of the community.

“We know that the vaccine is important,” Dr. Henry Young with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Healthy Community Center said. “We know that travel and cost can sometimes be a barrier to care, so we like this location because we’re within our community, where people can walk to it or get other transportation to it and then, like you mentioned, it’s completely free, so there’s no cost for anyone to come get the vaccine.”

The Healthy Community Center is holding another free flu shot clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. No appointments are necessary.
