Study finds which Ohio cities are home to the state’s best and worst drivers

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – A recent study has revealed which Ohio cities are home to the best and worst drivers in the state.

LendingTree, an online lending marketplace, determined its rankings based on which Ohio cities had the highest and lowest “incident” rates, including citations, accidents and DUIs. The data was sourced from over 500,000 car insurance form submissions to QuoteWizard.

Incidents were counted based on where the driver was from, rather than where the incident occurred. The study included the 25 biggest municipalities in Ohio and included submissions from August 2023 through August 2024.

Beavercreek, located east of Dayton, was the city with the worst drivers in the state, with 28.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers. The city with the second-worst drivers was Delaware, with 20.3 incidents per 1,000 drivers, followed by Lakewood (19.8), Hamilton (18.2) and Dublin (17.6).

The city with the best drivers in Ohio was Mentor, located east of Cleveland, with an incident rate of 10.1 per 1,000 drivers. Mentor was followed by Newark (10.8), Mansfield (12.2), Euclid (13) and Canton (14.1).

The study also claims the best drivers in Ohio operate Suzukis, with the vehicle being involved in  7.5 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Ram drivers had the worst incident rates among vehicle makes on Ohio roads, with 36.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers.

The company found that Ohio residents are “ generally good drivers ,” with the state having the 16th lowest traffic fatality rate in the country. The statewide rate of 10.8 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents is 16% lower than the national average of 12.8, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
