MANSFIELD, Ohio ( WCMH ) — A man is dead after being shot by Mansfield police early Saturday morning after an hours-long standoff from a domestic violence incident.

Police said officers were called to the 200 block of Cline Avenue just before 2 a.m. on a reported domestic violence incident. Officers arrived and saw a man with a knife at the door before he went back inside the house. A woman and two children were also inside the house. Authorities said the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Hostage negotiations began as Mansfield police worked with Richland County’s Allied Special Operation Response Team. After a three-hour standoff, the suspect released the children before the victim tried to escape, leading to police fatally shooting the man.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will be investigating this officer-involved shooting further.
