Drinking water available for residents without power
(WENY) -- With over 10,000 people in Chemung County alone without power, a number of fresh water stations have been set up on Tuesday, July 16th to help people get by. Chemung County Emergency Management has set up water distribution site in Elmira at the Southport Volunteer Fire Department located at 1001 Carl St. and the East Water Street and Dewitt Ave. Parking Lot located next to the Clarion Inn.

The little borough of Ulysses turned out in a big way for Ulysses Old Home Day on Saturday, July 13. Craft and food vendors lined Main Street and community groups held fundraisers and raffles. As power outages continue to affect the Southern Tier, Chemung County officials have set up temporary cooling stations to provide relief from the heat. Residents impacted by the storms can visit the main branch of the Steele Memorial Library at 101 East Church Street and New Beginnings Church at 300 East Miller Street in Elmira.

Michael Paul Dencenburg
Michael Paul Dencenburg, age 67, of Beaver Dams, N.Y., gave up his brave fight on Sunday, July 7, 2024. Michael was born June 28, 1957 in Dundee, N.Y., the son of the late Paul Kenneth and Atha-Lee (Lyle) Dencenburg. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1975. He started in the work field laying asphalt before getting into construction and backhoe operator. He eventually took a position with Shepard-Niles until they sold, which he then went to work for U.S. Salt in Watkins Glen. He worked until his health failed beyond recovery.

Area residents will have a chance to grab a cup of coffee with Sheriff Bill Schrom, Elmira Police Chief Kristen Thorne and Elmira Fire Chief Andrew Mallow later this month. The Coffee with the Chiefs and Sheriff event will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31st at the Elmira Tea and Coffee House, located at 100 West Water Street in Elmira.

Harrison Valley, Pa. — Betty M. Metcalf, 92, of Harrison Valley, Pa. died Monday, July 8, 2024 in her home. Born March 17, 1932 in Harrison Township, she was the daughter of Ivan L. and Myra I. Outman Kibbe. On March 25, 1950 in Harrison Valley, she married Fred H. Metcalf, who predeceased her on Aug. 10, 2007.

The orchestra and pianist Jeffrey Biegel are performing the Pennsylvania premiere of Peter Boyer’s new “Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue” at 7 p.m. this Friday, July 19 in Steadman Theatre at Commonwealth University-Mansfield and the iconic “Rhapsody in Blue,” written 100 years ago in 1924 by George Gershwin, at 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 20 at the Corning Museum of Glass Auditorium.
