Although Amanda Michael has not always been a massage therapist, she has already opened her own shop in a small studio at the heart of Nelsonville, at 27 W. Columbus Street.

Lavender Bliss Bodywork Studio first opened earlier this May and is owned and operated by Michael herself, she said. The studio is by appointment only and focuses on a variety of therapeutic massage techniques, she added.

“I’ve always wanted to be my own business ever since I became a massage therapist three years ago. So it’s a goal I’ve been working towards since day one when I got my license,” Michael said.

With a background in phlebotomy, the practice of drawing blood in a medical setting, Michael is well acquainted with working to help heal others, she said. However, due to the necessity of using needles for her prior work, she believes many of her patients did not feel as though they were being helped.

“I wanted to get into a career where people recognize that I was helping them,” Michael said. “They didn’t always recognize that phlebotomy was helping them.”

She offers a variety of massages and techniques geared towards relieving stress and pain, including postpartum and pregnancy specific services. Additionally, her massage options range from 30 to 90 minute sessions, with pricing from $40 to $120.

Although it is standard practice for a massage session to last an hour or more, Michael chose to include the 30 minute options in order to accommodate those with time and budget limits, she said. Additionally, the shorter timeframe shifts the focus of the session onto any specific problem areas the client may have, rather than a full body work through, Michael added.

She also offers a fully-clothed session for those who are unable or uncomfortable with removing their clothing to lay under the traditional massage sheet. Other requests, such as couples massages, are a possibility, but must be specially scheduled via phone, she said.

During her practice, Michael also utilizes a wide variety of therapeutic tools such as cooled stones, heated stones, bamboo massage sticks, heated blankets, cooled pillows and more. Many of these tools help to relax the client or relieve pain to help Michael better target problem areas, she said.

“I just like helping people and I think it’s a great way for people to get pain relief without taking drugs or, you know, medication,” Michael said.

Appointments are available to book on Michael’s website: https://www.massagebook.com/therapists/LavenderBlissBodywork/?src=external and for information, visit Lavender Bliss Bodywork Studio on Facebook or Instagram.
