NEK-CAP awarded Head Start grant
I am pleased to announce NEK-CAP, Inc., has been awarded the Early Head Start/Head Start grant for the next five years, renewable each year as a continuation grant. The grant application was fully funded and will be fully operational as proposed. Through the grant we will continue to provide high quality early childhood education and comprehensive services to children and families in nine northeast Kansas counties (Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Marshall, Nemaha and Pottawatomie). The Early Head Start home-based program will serve 120 children and/or prenatal mothers, and the Head Start center-based program will serve 195 children.

NEMAHA COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for multiple child sex crimes. Just after 11 a.m.,Tuesday, KBI agents arrested 51-year-old Robert Motto Jr., 51, of Wetmore on a warrant for four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, rape, and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, according to the KBI.

Four Kansas counties reporting tar spot in corn
A fungal disease that hampered corn production in 12 Kansas counties last year is back. Kansas State University plant pathologist Rodrigo Onofre said tar spot has already been found in four northeast Kansas counties – Doniphan, Atchison, Jefferson and Nemaha. Those four were among the 12 counties that reported tar spot in 2023, but the disease is showing up about a month earlier this time.
