If there is one conclusion that unites economists, it is that rent control is not the answer to the affordable housing crisis. A poll of economists at prominent universities conducted by the University of Chicago Booth School found that 81% of respondents opposed rent control, while only 2% supported it. Most economists believe that rent control laws are counterproductive, disincentivizing the construction of new affordable housing and the maintenance of existing stock.
