DNC targets JD Vance’s Nevada visit with abortion-focused billboards

EXCLUSIVE — Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) is making his first campaign stop in Nevada, and he'll be greeted with nine billboards highlighting his anti-abortion stance.

The billboards, in Spanish and English, will be positioned along Interstate 580 and I-80 in Reno, where Vance will be speaking at a rally. On the billboards will be a photo of Vance and former President Donald Trump with the phrase "7 in 10 Nevadans support reproductive rights. JD Vance wants to ban abortion. Trump-Vance is too extreme for Nevada."

In Nevada, abortion until 24 weeks of pregnancy is protected under state law, but now Democrats and abortion rights advocates are looking to amend the Nevada Constitution to solidify abortion access. The issue will appear on the November ballot, and if it passes it must be approved for a second vote in 2026 in order to amend the constitution.

A poll shows that 69% of Nevadans are for abortion rights, and abortion has been protected in Nevada for over three decades. Gov. Joe Lombardo (R-NV) signed legislation last year enshrining protection for out-of-state patients and in-state providers, and Sam Brown, one of the leading Republican Senate candidates, sat down for an NBC News interview with his wife who had an abortion when she was 24. Though Brown has an anti-abortion record, he said he would opposed a national abortion ban and would not fight to limit abortion access in the state.

“The law is stable and it’s not going anywhere,” Brown said.

“J.D. Vance is committed to doing whatever it takes to follow through with Donald Trump’s plans to completely undermine women’s reproductive freedom in every single state across the country," Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Stephanie Justice said. "Thanks to Trump, MAGA Republicans have enacted extreme abortion bans in 22 states – and if given the chance, Trump and Vance will force Nevada women to face the same horrific reality after they ban abortion nationwide. Make no mistake: Trump and Vance are running to fulfill their extreme Project 2025 agenda, and the consequences of a Trump-Vance administration would be devastating for women in Nevada and across the country."

Vance has a strong anti-abortion track record. He signed a letter calling on the Department of Justice to use the Comstock Act to ban mailing abortion pills nationwide back in 2023.

And now, Democrats are pointing to comments Vance made in 2022 calling for a national abortion ban; however, Vance said he agrees with Trump that abortion should be an issue left up to the states' discretion.

“My view is that Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party, and his views on abortion are going to be the views that dominate this party and drive this party forward,” Vance said to Fox News’s Sean Hannity. “Alabama’s going to make a different decision from California. That is a reasonable thing. And that’s how I think we build some bridges and have some respect for one another.”

Even before Vance came into the picture, President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the rest of the Democratic Party have said Trump will ban abortion despite his insistence otherwise.

Currently polling shows that Trump leads Harris in Nevada, but only by a slim margin.
