GE Vernova: Vineyard Wind blade failure due to ‘manufacturing deviation’

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The company that builds Vineyard Wind’s turbines has identified the cause of the “blade failure incident” that resulted in truckloads of debris washing up on the shores of Nantucket nearly two weeks ago.

During an earnings call on Wednesday , GE Vernova told investors the failure was caused by a “material or manufacturing deviation” at a factory in Gaspé, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Vineyard Wind temporarily shut down after ‘blade failure incident’

CEO Scott Strazik said the company plans to reinspect all 150 offshore wind blades that were produced at that plant.

“The industry uses non-destructive testing — think ultrasound, think a radiologist, but for a blade — to identify deviations,” Strazik explained on the call. “We are going to go and do this on every blade.”

GE Verona has not confirmed a clear timeline for the inspections at this time. Additionally, the company said they have not received word from the Federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement as to when they will lift or modify the suspension order.

“We are working with urgency to scrutinize our operations across Offshore Wind,” Strazik said. “Pace matters here, but we are going to be thorough instead of rushed.”
