In honor of National Buffalo Wing Day, here's some New Bedford spots to enjoy wings

NEW BEDFORD — July 29 in National Buffalo Wing Day! There are several restaurants in the area that take pride in making sure they are serving the best wings.

At Pour Farm , the kitchen uses fresh (not frozen) wings and tosses them in their house dry rub, then smokes them with applewood, and deep fries them to order.

"We often hear people talking about the best wings around, and we want people to come try our wings," said co-owner Jen McHugh.

"They are delicious, salty, smoky and crispy, and we think they are the best wings around."

The 'spicy' history of Buffalo Wings

The history of the Buffalo wing can be traced back to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, in 1964. The credit for inventing the Buffalo wing, also known as the chicken wing, goes to Teressa Bellissimo, who owned the bar with her husband Frank.

The story goes that one night, their son and some friends came to the bar late at night looking for something to eat. Teressa looked in the refrigerator and found some leftover chicken wings, which she typically used to make soup stock. Instead, she decided to deep fry them and toss them in a hot sauce made of Frank's RedHot sauce and butter. The Buffalo wing was served for the first time as a late-night snack and was an instant hit with the customers.

The popularity of Buffalo wings skyrocketed in 1990 when McDonald's introduced them as a limited-time menu item. It is estimated that Americans consume over 10 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday alone.

The largest serving of chicken wings ever recorded was at the Wells Wing Fest in Wells, Maine, in 2013, weighing in at 4,510 pounds.

Here are some city spots to consider checking out Buffalo wings:

    Wings Over New Bedford

Located at 972 Kempton St., Wings Over is a chicken wing chain founded in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1999. In 2018, Wings Over launched a rebrand and as of April 2023, the chain had 33 units, mostly in the Northeast and Midwest.

In the New Bedford spot, there is a vast selection of flavors available, ranging from mild to hot, such as fire, golden barbecue, and honey barbecue. There are also traditional options like teriyaki and honey mustard, as well as unique flavors like hot garlic, hot lemon pepper, and mango habanero.

More: Smashed is a success in former Sarducci's spot. Here is what's on the menu.

For a touch of sweetness, try sweet chili or sweet Korean fire. In addition to these options, there are also hot honey, Cajun, garlic palm, and lemon pepper flavors, as well as a classic plain option.

You can order six, eight or 10 wings, or choose a combination of two flavors and two dips, with 14 to 24 groups of four. If you're feeling extra hungry, you can also opt for wings-by-the-piece, with up to 100 wings available in your favorite flavors.

    Rose Alley Ale House

The pub-style restaurant on Front Street is owned by a group of five individuals who also own restaurants such as Cork and Carmine's. The pub offers a selection of high-end draft beers and serves both lunch and dinner. For those interested in getting wings, the menu includes a half dozen wings with a choice of 11 different sauces, ranging from mild to spicy.

Some of the sauces offered are Buffalo, Buffique (Buffalo and Mozambique sauce), Nashville hot, honey barbeque, and sweet chili. Customers also have the option of adding a side of sweet potato fries, onion rings, fried pickles, or fried or pumped chips to their order.

    Endzone Restaurant and Bar

The restaurant and bar, Endzone, located at 218 Coggeshall St, and has been owned by the same family since its founding in 1994. Their interpretation on the Buffalo wing are chicken tenderloins tossed in traditional Buffalo, Buffalo/Mozambique, Gold Rush sauces, or Fire & Ice Dry Rub, and are served with crispy celery.

    Knuckleheads Bar & Grill

The sports bar, located at 85 MacArthur Drive, was established in 2004 and takes its name from a circle of friends who were known as the "knuckleheads." Co-owned by John Stone and Paul Souza, the bar was created with the intention of providing a laid-back and enjoyable atmosphere for customers. The menu features delicious chicken wings, which can be seasoned with BBQ, Buffalo, Asian, Gold Fever, or Cajun sauces.

    Top Shelf Bar & Grill

Bobby Afonso has been the owner of Top Shelf Bar and Grill for almost 13 years, situated at 1825 Acushnet Ave. Customers can choose between bone-in or boneless chicken wings or strips, paired with their preferred sauce including Buffalo, barbecue, honey mustard or chipotle barbecue.
