NEW BERN, N.C (WNCT) — Juneteenth celebrations are happening all across Eastern North Carolina this week. Pamlico County Schools is connecting a New Bern artist with a mark he didn’t know he left over 40 years ago.

The artist, Lee Hood, has been painting since he was a little boy and even has his own murals painted around downtown New Bern. He is also responsible for a mural that has hung on the main hall of Pamlico County High School, which displays the school’s mascot.

What was once a school project in 1979, is now a staple to the district.

“Brings myself back to that time when I was that young boy and this school with the club, you know,” Hood said. “You know, putting trust in me to actually do something for them. And, you know, it was it was to me, it was just basically overwhelming. Just a moment ago, I almost went almost broke out in tears. It was like an old friend that I had forgotten about that I was just meeting again.”
