NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — The N.C. State Highway Patrol has released more information on three separate wrecks that killed three people and injured a state trooper over the weekend.

    Carteret County, NC 58

A three-vehicle crash killed two people Sunday morning on NC 58 near Old Church Road in Carteret County.

Troopers responded around 10:30 a.m. to the area and found the crash happened when Steven Robert Shelton, 48, of Ayden, tried to pass a vehicle while heading north on NC 58.

Troopers said Dale Mangum, 64, of Angier, and her passenger, Tammy Witham, 59, of New Bern, were traveling south on NC 58 when their vehicle was struck by Shelton’s head-on. Shelton’s vehicle then collided with another vehicle also traveling south.

Mangum and Witham passed away at the scene from injuries. Shelton was transported to ECU Health in Greenville by helicopter. The driver of the third vehicle wasn’t injured.

Officials said after consulting with the district attorney, charges will be forthcoming.

    Craven County US 70

Troopers are investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed the driver Sunday afternoon.

Troopers responded at 3:43 p.m. to the westbound side of US 70 near mile marker 406. Officials said the vehicle was traveling westbound on US 70, went off the road to the right and collided with a tree.

The vehicle caught fire as a trooper and a bystander attempted to remove the driver. They were unsuccessful and the driver died at the scene.

The investigation is currently ongoing, including determining the driver’s identity.

    Trooper crash in New Bern

A N.C. Highway Patrol trooper’s vehicle was struck just before 5 p.m. on NC 55.

Officials said the trooper’s vehicle was facing east on NC 55 at the intersection of Glenburnie Road when Christopher Marsh, 31, of New Bern, collided with the rear of the trooper’s vehicle, causing it to travel 200 feet into the intersection.

The trooper was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Marsh was charged with Careless and Reckless Driving.
