SOMERSET, NJ - As August approaches and back-to-school preparations are in full swing, parents and students in Franklin Township face the annual challenge of purchasing school supplies and backpacks. With seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, the township serves over 7,000 students, many of whom are eagerly stocking up on essentials such as pencils, notebooks, and backpacks.

However, with 27.7 percent of students on free and reduced lunch, the financial burden of being prepared for school is a significant concern for many families.

To aid Franklin Township students, local Assemblyman Joe Danielsen has launched “Project Backpack 2024,” his annual backpack drive. Danielsen, who has represented Franklin Township for over 10 years, is known for his dedication to community service, including initiatives like his “Head to Toe Winter Clothing Drive” and the Annual Job Fair. Last year, his backpack drive collected over 1,000 backpacks, and is expected to achieve similar success this year.

In addition to Franklin Township, Danielsen’s efforts extend to students in New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway, and South Bound Brook. His commitment to supporting education remains unwavering.

“As inflation rises, families continue to face tough choices—backpacks and supplies for their children, or food, medicine, and gas,” Danielsen said in a public statement. “I would like to ease the burden of difficult choices in this new economic reality.”

Danielsen emphasized the importance of community contributions in making the backpack drive a success.
