NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A New Castle man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly stabbed a city police officer in the arm.

Dustin B. Sidwell, 36, was preliminarily charged with attempted murder and criminal recklessness. He was being held in the Henry County Jail under a surety bond of $106,500 and a cash bond of $6,450.

According to a news release, city police about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday responded to a report of a man with a knife trying to force his way into a home at the Vine Street Apartment Complex.

The first officer to arrive at the scene reported encountering a man later identified as Sidwell in the complex's parking lot. He said Sidwell approached him and without warning pulled a knife and stabbed the officer in the right bicep.

A second officer who arrived at the scene used his police car to push Sidwell away from his colleague who had been wounded. The New Castle man then "fled on foot while still brandishing the knife," the release said.

When other officers arrived at the scene, they ordered Sidwell to drop the knife, but he reportedly ignored those demands and ingested a substance that was later determined to be meth.

After a foot pursuit that spanned several blocks, an officer used an electronic stun device to subdue Sidwell, and he was taken into custody. He was taken to Henry County Hospital for an examination before being delivered to the jail.

The officer who was stabbed was also taken to the hospital and was released after treatment. The release said his wound was not life-threatening.

The Henry County prosecutor's office will determine what formal charges will be filed.

At the time of his latest arrest, Sidwell already faced an intimidation charge filed in April in Henry Circuit Court 2.

According to court records, he has been convicted of crimes including burglary (four times), domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury and theft.
