Oklahoma executes Richard Rojem Jr. in ex-stepdaughter's murder

Dill Work and Play OHCE holds June Meeting
The Dill Work and Play OHCE met June 11, 2024, for a regular meeting. June is do Your Own Thing, and we chose to eat out at Fred’s in Elk City. We met at 12:30 and enjoyed lunch. Jane Shull called the meeting to order and roll was called with 4 answering with “What have or do you plan to do this Summer?” Thought of the Day was each member present gave a thought of as growing up what Patriotic actions were observed in school. We also discussed things we do now to show our Patriotism. We also remembered and honored several who served our country. Wilma’s husband served in World War II and was on the ship that took part in the surrender of the war. David Gathright was personally involved and it is quite a story. The other husbands were veterans which served in the 60s and have stories of their own.
Gallery of the Plains Indian gearing up for 10th exhibition
The gallery of the Plains Indian at Colony will present the 10th collection of art in conjunction with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Labor Day Pow Wow. The need for a marketplace for the abundant Indian artistic talent was recognized by Justice Yvonne Kauger of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and she founded the Gallery of the Plains Indian I 1981. The Gallery is managed by a board of trustees which include: Jerome Bushyhead, Benjamin Harjo Jr., Sharron Ahtone Harjo, Betty Hunter, Alison McManes, William Renner and Terry Zinn. Based on the Colony Pow Wow, Justice Kauger expanded her idea of an Indian market to include a showcase to honor Native American culture. This dream became reality on June 5 through 7, 1978 when Red Earth premiered in Oklahoma City. Benjamin Harjo Jr. is the featured artist in this year’s exhibit. Mr. Harjo is a1988 Grand Award winner of the Red Earth Festival. He is always a prominent artist at the Santa Fe Market in a variety of mediums. In 1990, he won the Woody Crumbo Memorial Award, first place in miniature, first place in the print division for a mono print. He was also awarded a gold medal by the American Indian and Cowboy Association. Mr. Harjo has been featured in the Oklahoma Today magazine, Southwest Arts magazine and in Southern Living magazine. Other invited artists whose work will be displayed are Debbie Ahtone, Jeannie Barbour, Bob Bell, Arthie Blackowl, Iwannah Bonnaha, Helen Burgess, Jim Burgess, Frank Bushyhead, Alvie Carney, Sherman and Allie Chaddlesone, Charles Chapmen, Cynthia Clay, Darran Cooper, Bobby Creepingbear, Ted Creepingbear, Chebon Dacon, Mike Daniel, Mavis Doering, Ron English and Bill Glass. Also Brenda Kennedy Grummer, Buddy Guy, Sharron Ahtone Harjo, K. Henderson, Brooks Henson, Mike Larsen, Ben Little Raven, Merlin Little thunder, Kisse Mouse, Doc Tate Nevaquaya, Bennie Nichols, Jane Osti, Fernando Padilla Jr,. Harvey Pratt, Austin Real Rider, Tim Saupitty, Bert Seabourn, Jack Tointigh, Kevin D. Vinyard Sr,. And Tiller Wesley. The public is invited to attend a reception in honor of the artists at the Gallery on Sunday, Sept,1, from 5 to 6 p.m. The annual Cheyenne Arapaho Pow Wow will be in progress. Colony is located 15 miles south of Weatherford. The Gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30 and 31 and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1.
First Farm Exhibits Since 1941 Expected to Be Quality
Washita county’s first free fair since 1941 which will open in Cordell next Monday will star county farm exhibits and will feature a varied series of entertainment events including amateur rodeo, saddle horse races, baseball games, band concerts, and music by WKY radio stars. An added attraction for the fair will be cash and merchandise awards, valued at several hundred dollars, which will be given by Cordell merchants. Awards will be made Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at 2 o’clock and a $25 cash award will be given each day. Registration at the desk at the front entrance of the fair building will be the only requirement for participating in the drawings. Old time country horse’s races will be held at e Roundup club track east of town at 10:30 Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Announcement of the event states that all who have good running “plugs” are invited to participate. Cash prizes will be awarded the winners and there will be no entrance fee and no admission charge. Cordell, Dill City, and Butler teams will be participants in baseball games which will be staged at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons on the ball diamond adjoining the fairground. There will be no admission charge. The teams will play for cash prizes. Teams will draw to determine contestants for Tuesday’s game and the winner will meet the third team in the Wednesday contest. The Cordell high school band will present concerts Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons after 3 o’clock. The Merit Serenaders, WKY radio stars, will present a free program at the fairgrounds at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon and will play Wednesday night for a dance at the Roundhouse club house southwest of Cordell. The Roundup club is announcing an amateur rodeo at 8 o’clock Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the club grounds. contests will include bareback bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, cowboy and cowgirl square dance on horseback, ladies flag race, ladies pole bending race, junior calf roping, and junior pole bending race. Cash prizes will be awarded. Washita County’s new fair building east of the high school campus will be the location for the fair. Recent improvements at the building will include a livestock arena, stationary bleachers, and hog and sheep shed. Next Monday, September 19, will be official entry day with entries closing at 6 o’clock in the afternoon. Judging will be in progress Tuesday and Wednesday and display of exhibits will continue through Thursday. No exhibits may be checked out before 6 o’clock Thursday evening. Colors designating premiums are listed as follows: championship, royal purple; first, blue; second, red; third, white; fourth, green; fifth, yellow. Cash prizes will be awarded winning exhibits. Following is the schedule of exhibits; Beef cattle, Herefords, shorthorns, Angus; Hereford, Angus, and shorthorn steers. Dairy cattle, Jerseys, Guernseys, Holstiens, milking shorthorns, other breeds. Swine, Durocs, Poland Chinas, Chester Whites, Hampshires, Berkshires. Horses, quarter horses, palominos, Shetland ponies. Sheep, Shropshires, Hampshires, other breeds. Poultry American, Asiatic, English, and Mediterranean breeds.

A motorcycle accident near Hydro Monday morning put an Arkansas man in the hospital. According to the collision report provided by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the wreck took place 2 miles east of Hydro in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 when 55-year-old Michael R. Ault of Gould, Arkansas drifted into a closed lane of the interstate due to construction and struck two traffic cones while riding his 2016 Harley Davidson.
