CONCORD, NH – The New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety (NHOHS) has announced plans for a high-visibility enforcement initiative along U.S. Route 4, a critical 107-mile corridor stretching from Lebanon to Portsmouth. The campaign is set to begin on May 21, 2024, aiming to enhance road safety and reduce the frequency of traffic accidents.

According to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, the Route 4 corridor has witnessed over 32,000 crashes from 2018 to 2023, with significant concentrations in the areas around Concord, Portsmouth, and the counties of Rockingham, Strafford, and Merrimack.

The upcoming enforcement effort will see the NHOHS collaborating with state, county, and local law enforcement bodies, including agencies from the State of Maine. The primary focus will be on curbing dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding and distracted driving, which are major contributors to roadway incidents.

Assistant Commissioner Eddie Edwards of the New Hampshire Department of Safety highlighted the importance of the campaign: “Route 4 is a vital artery for both commuters and leisure travelers moving through the Upper Valley to the Capital Region and onward to Maine. This enforcement effort is designed not only to penalize poor driving but also to educate motorists about the dangers of unsafe behavior behind the wheel.”

This initiative is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, facilitated through grants provided by the NHOHS. The campaign underscores the commitment of multiple agencies to improve traffic safety and reduce the incidence of crashes and fatalities on New Hampshire’s roads.

Officials at the NHOHS express their gratitude to all participating agencies and personnel, emphasizing the collective goal of making Route 4 safer for everyone. The office also extends its appreciation to the residents and visitors of New Hampshire who drive responsibly and support these road safety measures.
