SALEM, MA – Salem's vibrant artistic community is set to be enriched by an innovative public art installation, “Transcending Borders - Immigrant Experiences and Dreams,” presented by multi-disciplinary artist Julia Csekö. The project runs through September 8, 2024, at the Artist Row Residency Studio on 24 New Derby Street.

As part of Salem's Public Artist in Residence (PAiR) program, Csekö's work engages the community in celebrating and sharing immigration stories. The installation is highlighted by over 2,000 ribbons, each bearing the welcoming message "YOU ARE WELCOME HERE" in twelve languages, reflecting the diverse linguistic heritage of Boston's immigrant population. This concept draws inspiration from Brazilian traditions, specifically the practice of tying wishes on ribbons at the Church of Senhor do Bonfim in Salvador, Bahia.

The installation is not just a visual spectacle but also an interactive experience. It features QR codes and a mailbox for visitors to share their own immigration stories, which may then be integrated into a larger narrative through augmented reality. This interactive component aims to destigmatize immigrant experiences and encourage a broader understanding and appreciation of immigrant cultures within the community.

Throughout her residency, Csekö is not only focusing on creating art but also on gathering voices through partnerships with local organizations like Salem Access TV, which helps produce a series of interviews with immigrants. These narratives are further showcased during curated storytelling events, adding personal dimensions to the public engagement.

In addition to the physical installation, the project will culminate in an exhibition at Old Town Hall in January 2025, promising to bring together the stories and experiences collected during the residency.

Julia Csekö, born in Colorado to Brazilian parents, brings a rich background of activism and advocacy for the arts. Her work is celebrated for its ability to bridge communities and foster dialogue, making her a perfect fit for Salem’s PAiR. Her previous accolades include numerous grants and fellowships, affirming her impact and dedication to the arts community.

Residents and visitors are invited to participate in this communal art project by visiting Artist’s Row, engaging with the installation, and perhaps leaving a story of their own. This initiative not only celebrates the city’s cultural diversity but also underscores Salem's commitment to being a welcoming community for all.
