NEW CASTLE, NH – In a remarkable display of community vigilance and inter-agency collaboration, a Massachusetts man was apprehended for illegally catching and intending to sell oversized Striped Bass. The incident occurred off the coasts of New Castle and Rye, New Hampshire, around 3 pm yesterday, according to NH Fish and Game.

Numerous tips from concerned anglers began reaching New Hampshire Fish and Game Department through direct calls and the NH Operation Game Thief tip line. Reports indicated that a boat, identifiable by its Massachusetts hull number, was seen catching and keeping Striped Bass significantly larger than state regulations allow. Witnesses alerted the individual that authorities had been notified, prompting him to flee the scene.

The Portsmouth Police Department located the suspect as he attempted to dispose of the evidence, finding him with 14 oversized Striped Bass ranging from 37 to 47 inches. New Hampshire's saltwater fishing regulations permit only one Striped Bass per angler per day, which must measure between 28 and 31 inches.

The suspect confessed during a comprehensive interview with NH Fish and Game officers, revealing his intent to sell the illegally caught fish under a commercial license in Massachusetts. He now faces fines for licensing violations and illegal possession of each fish.

Thanks to the swift action and teamwork among the NH Fish and Game Department, Maine Marine Patrol, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and local police departments, a significant natural resource violation was thwarted. The seized fish are set to be donated upon conviction of the individual.

This case underscores the critical role of community involvement in protecting natural resources and the effectiveness of quick reporting of environmental violations.
