Dover's Planning Board Endorses New Design for Community Trail Phase IV

DOVER, NH – The city's Planning Board has officially endorsed a new bridge design for the fourth phase of the Community Trail, which will extend through Bellamy Park and conclude near Knox Marsh Road. This decision came during the Planning Board’s recent meeting on July 23, 2024, according to the City of Dover.

Project engineers from Fuss & O’Neill, the engineering firm contracted by the city, presented two potential routes for Phase IV. The first option proposed utilizing the existing bridge over the Bellamy River into Bellamy Park, while the second suggested constructing a new bridge closer to the high school fields. Concerns about the first option included safety issues from its route through the Bellamy Park Disc Golf Course, its impact on wetlands, and limited accessibility for handicapped individuals.

The endorsed second option, though more costly due to the new bridge construction, was favored for its direct connectivity to Dover High School and its provision for parking at Knox Marsh Road. This route avoids the safety and accessibility issues presented by the first option and has less environmental impact.

Funding for the Community Trail has been largely supported by federal grants managed through the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, covering 80% of costs, with the city contributing a 20% match. Additional grant funding will be sought to implement the endorsed trail design.

The planning and permit acquisition for this project is expected to take two to three years, with construction anticipated to be completed within one season.
