FARMINGTON, NH - Nestled on Meaderboro Road, Butternut Farm in Farmington, NH, offers a quintessential New England experience, perfect for a family day out or a leisurely afternoon adventure. My visit to this charming farm was inspired by a question I posed on the Rochester, NH Scanner Alerts Facebook page, asking where to find the best apple cider donuts. The overwhelming response pointed me to Butternut Farm—and I was not disappointed.

Having visited Butternut Farm in the past for berry picking, I knew I was in for a treat. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the farm's friendly dog, aptly named Macintosh—a nod to the type of apples we planned to pick that day. Parking was a breeze, with easily accessible spaces that made our visit even more convenient.

As we entered the farm, we were drawn to the cider house on the left, where the enticing aroma of warm cider donuts, fresh pies, and hard cider filled the air. To the right, a booth awaited us, offering a choice of picking boxes or bags. Nearby, a small farm stand tempted us with an array of cold drinks, cider, jams, jellies, honey, and fresh fruits. The vibrant pumpkins displayed to the left of the stand added a festive touch to the autumn atmosphere. Behind the stand, we were delighted to find a small petting area with goats and peacocks, adding to the farm's family-friendly charm.

Eager to begin our apple-picking adventure, we headed to the orchard, where ladders were thoughtfully placed throughout, making it easy to reach the ripe fruit. The orchard was well-marked, with clear signs indicating which apples were ready to pick and which were still ripening. We quickly filled our half-peck bag with Macintosh apples, their perfect ripeness promising delicious snacks and treats in the days to come.

After our apple-picking, we took some time to visit the goats and peacocks before heading to the store. There, we purchased a few honey sticks and a half-gallon of cold cider, eager to savor the farm's fresh offerings. But the highlight of our visit awaited us at the cider house—warm apple cider donuts.

The donuts lived up to their reputation. Warm and generously coated in a cinnamon-sugar blend, they boasted a satisfying crispy crust and a soft, tender interior. The flavor was a testament to the quality ingredients and the care taken in their preparation, with a delightful buttery and caramel undertone that set them apart from other cider donuts I've tried.

Adding to the charm of Butternut Farm was their corgi, Teddy, who was very friendly and engaging, making us feel even more welcome as we explored the farm.
