SALEM, MA – The City of Salem is developing a Safety Action Plan (SAP) as part of its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) initiative, aimed at improving road safety for all users. With 39 fatal or severe injury crashes occurring between 2019 and 2023, the city is prioritizing safety enhancements to reduce accidents and make the streets safer.

Funded by a federal SS4A planning grant, the Safety Action Plan will guide future investments in safety infrastructure and policies across Salem. Once the plan is completed, the city will be eligible for additional funding to implement its recommendations, creating safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transit users alike.

The SAP will focus on identifying priority areas for safety improvements and will offer recommendations for infrastructure changes, policy shifts, and other enhancements. Salem’s initiative aims to address transportation safety in a comprehensive way, with special attention to communities that experience greater transportation vulnerability.

    Project Overview:

    1. Understanding Current Safety Issues – The project team is analyzing data from recorded crashes around Salem to identify hazardous areas and determine which road users are most at risk.
    2. Engaging the Salem Community – Broad public participation is critical to shaping the Action Plan. The city is offering multiple opportunities for residents to provide feedback and share their perspectives on how to improve road safety.
    3. Prioritizing Safety Enhancements – Based on community input and existing transportation practices, the SAP will recommend specific safety projects across Salem, prioritizing those with the most potential to reduce accidents and improve safety.

    How to Get Involved:

The City of Salem is actively seeking input from the community to shape the SAP. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on transportation safety conditions, barriers, and needs by participating in a survey. Community members will also have opportunities to engage in discussions as the project progresses.
