BOSTON, MA – On August 15, 2024, Mayor Michelle Wu and the City of Boston proudly hosted the 2024 First Literacy Scholarship Ceremony at Boston City Hall, celebrating 26 adult learners who have been awarded scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year. These scholarships are part of the First Literacy initiative, which supports graduates of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English language programs in Massachusetts as they continue their education or vocational training.

Since its inception in 1990, the First Literacy Scholarship program has awarded over 600 scholarships to adult learners across the state. The program provides essential financial support to individuals who often face significant challenges, such as balancing caregiving and financial responsibilities, while also pursuing higher education or vocational training. Many of the scholarship recipients are the first in their families to attend college and are recognized for their educational achievements, community service, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Eligibility for the scholarships is based on a nomination from the student’s ABE program, proof of financial need, and acceptance to a college or training program. Scholars are honored annually at a special ceremony where their accomplishments and efforts are celebrated.

This year's ceremony featured Trinh Nguyen, Chief of Worker Empowerment, who shared her personal journey as a refugee immigrant to the United States. Nguyen’s story highlighted the transformative power of education and the importance of opportunities that enable individuals to improve their lives and futures.

The Office of Workforce Development (OWD), a key department within the Worker Empowerment Cabinet, plays a vital role in supporting adult education programs in Boston. In partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS), OWD helps adult learners advance their skills and achieve economic security. Last year, over 3,500 adult learners benefited from Adult Basic Education services funded through joint state and city investments.

As these scholars move forward in their educational journeys, First Literacy and OWD remain committed to promoting lifelong learning and creating pathways to success for adult learners. The scholarships reflect the power of education to change lives and the importance of investing in programs that uplift and empower communities.
