ROCHESTER, NH – The Rochester Police Commission met on September 4, 2024, to discuss ongoing efforts within the department, including recruitment, officer training, community outreach, and budget updates.

    Staffing Challenges and Recruitment Efforts

Chief Gary Boudreau updated the Commission on the department’s recruitment process, noting that the Rochester Police Department is actively working to fill vacancies. Six candidates are currently undergoing background investigations. Despite staffing shortages, the department remains focused on ensuring that only qualified individuals are hired. Recruitment remains a top priority as the department seeks to strengthen its force amidst a statewide shortage of law enforcement personnel.

    Officer Training and Professional Development

The Commission discussed the ongoing professional development of officers. CPR training for all officers is underway, led by Officer Steven McPherson. Additionally, officers are completing annual defensive tactics recertification and physical fitness testing, both of which are critical to maintaining the high standards expected of law enforcement personnel.

Community Engagement and K-9 Unit Involvement

The department’s K-9 unit, led by Officer Hatch and K-9 Ripley, has been actively involved in both operational and community events. The pair participated in National Night Out, a community event aimed at fostering relationships between law enforcement and the public, which drew over 3,000 attendees. The K-9 unit also contributed to a fundraiser for a child with cancer, showcasing the department’s commitment to supporting local causes.

    Budget Updates and Fiscal Responsibility

Chief Boudreau informed the Commission that the department is on track to return over $400,000 in salaries and benefits to the city, reflecting a prudent approach to budget management. The Chief also noted that the fiscal year 2024 budget remains on target, with no major discrepancies reported.

    Upcoming Elections and Public Safety

The department is working in partnership with the City Clerk’s Office to ensure public safety during upcoming elections. Police officers will be present at polling locations to provide security and assist with any issues that may arise. This collaboration aims to ensure a safe and smooth voting process for residents.

    Next Steps and Future Initiatives

The Commission will continue to focus on recruitment, professional development, and community engagement in the coming months. Plans are being made to address ongoing staffing shortages, while continuing to strengthen relationships with the community through outreach programs and public events.
