DOVER, NH – September 17, 2024, marks the 237th anniversary of the drafting of the United States Constitution, a pivotal document in the nation's history. In honor of this occasion, the Dover City Council has declared September 17-23 as Constitution Week, inviting the community to reflect on the significance of the Constitution and its enduring impact.

The proclamation was made during the August 28 City Council meeting, where Deputy Mayor Dennis Shanahan read the official declaration in the presence of members from the Margery Sullivan chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Shanahan highlighted the importance of the Constitution, stating, "The Constitution is our nation's guiding document, and it is important to recognize and celebrate its existence while recalling the strength and bravery of those who fought for The Constitution and its amendments throughout history."

The proclamation also noted that the Constitution officially became U.S. law on June 21, 1788, when New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify it, underscoring New Hampshire's critical role in the nation's founding.

"Constitution Week is a great opportunity for citizens to learn about, understand, and defend the Constitution," Shanahan added.

The proclamation calls on Dover citizens to observe Constitution Week and to reflect on the importance of this foundational document, encouraging active learning and appreciation for the freedoms and governance principles it upholds.
