NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — People will be firing up those grills for the Fourth of July, but it’s important to know what foods your pet can and cannot eat.

The smell of those hamburgers and hot dogs is enticing, not only to us, but to our pets, as well.

GUIDE: Fourth of July 2024 fireworks and celebrations in Connecticut

Small, unseasoned pieces of hamburger, deboned fish, or steak is okay. They’re also free to enjoy veggies like sweet potato, zucchini and carrots. Watermelon, blueberries and raspberries are safe and delicious fruits.

However, you don’t want to share pork, anything with bones, corn cobs, onions, tomatoes or grapes.

Those foods can either pose a choking hazard or cause gastroenteritis.

    What a bout fireworks?

“It’s firework season, so it’s really important that if you know your pet is afraid of loud noises, put them in a space where they may not hear them as well,” said Brian Lang, of Mill Pond Veterinary Hospital. “You can get a white noise machine. Certainly, restrict their access to escaping outside if they’re going to run somewhere. Give them a space to go to.”

Now sometimes pets do run when they hear those loud noises, so make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and their microchip is up to date.
