NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Sen. Richard Blumenthal is one of the representatives spearheading the STOP CMV bill that’s before Congress right now.

Nyberg: How close are we to a CMV vaccine?

Congenital cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is the number one cause of non-genetic deafness in the United States. The virus can also cause a plethora of other birth defects. One in five babies born with the virus will show symptoms.

The bipartisan bill is in committee right now, and Blumenthal hopes to have a hearing on it soon. According to Blumenthal, a new study at the University of Michigan is saying that congenital CMV may cause autism.

Blumenthal joined Ann Nyberg to discuss his initiative to spread awareness about the condition.
