NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A historic ship has made port in New Haven.

The Amistad Freedom Schooner has docked at Long Wharf, setting of celebrations of its history.

“Really, the legacy of this led to a huge growth in the abolitionist movement thanks, in part, to their successful Supreme Court battle,” said Chris Menapace, the director of Discovery Amistad. “And, of course, this is incredibly important to Connecticut’s history as many of the abolitionists were involved, and this is the site where the ship arrived in 1839.”

A festival on Friday celebrated the visit with a food truck festival, a picnic and a movie screening. The activities continue from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
