NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Yale New Haven Hospital could face a $9,000 fine after it was accused of not properly handling and transferring nuclear materials used for cancer treatment.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed the fine after radiation alarms went off in December at a lead-disposal facility, according to the NRC. An unused vial of lutetium-177, used for targeted nuclear medicine therapy for tumors and cancer, was in an undamaged, lead transfer container. Several empty lead containers that had been contaminated with the substance were also found.

A Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection investigation tracked the containers back to the hospital.

“In this case, there was a breakdown when it came to thoroughly checking the transfer containers for radiation prior to their removal from the hospital,” Raymond Lorson, the region I administrator for the NRC, said in a written announcement. “Ensuring NRC-licensed materials are properly handled is essential when it comes to protecting workers, the public and the environment.”

A nuclear medicine technology didn’t properly perform radiation checks before sending the containers to a disposal facility, according to the NRC. In response, the hospital has added new procedures and training.

“Yale New Haven Hospital appreciates our partnership with the NRC and the opportunity to promptly rectify the matter noted by the NRC in its review,” a hospital spokesperson said in a written statement to News 8. “We are proud of our safe radiation program history and have taken steps to ensure that clear processes are in place for our employees. We remain committed to adhering to all NRC quality and safety programs.”
