Zoners To Coliseum: No Booze For You
Hundreds of new residents will soon be allowed to move into on-the-rise apartments at the ex-Coliseum property — but they won’t be allowed to walk downstairs to buy alcohol at a “high-end” liquor store on site. Alexis Kang had envisioned opening up a liquor store...
Mednick’s Not Going Back
Steve Mednick played a song from a new album as well as from his next album — while waiting to see how both the track, and country’s political future, play out. It was all one song. And it’s not finished yet. Mednick — a veteran municipal government lawyer and...
Temporary Plaza Turns Out Tunes
Early in Kudzu Queen’s set Thursday evening, Jess Jones paused to change the battery in the pickup of her guitar, but also to look out over the audience that had assembled in front of the band and appreciate what was happening. “It’s so nice to see everybody out here,...
No Yondr Pouches (Yet), No Phone Problems
Troup seventh grader Lizmarie Hernandez eyed the word “consume” in her English workbook. Instead of looking it up on her phone, she flipped to the book’s glossary to learn its definition — and then wrote that down by hand to help herself remember. Lizmarie undertook...
Zoning Enables Reluctant Smoke Shop
Hassan Alsufyani wanted to open up a convenience store at the entrance to Westville Village. But local zoning law prohibits such a use at that spot — so he now sells strictly tobacco, bongs, e‑cigarettes, and vaping products instead. Such is the unwelcome fate — for store owner and, apparently,...
Artists Make Light At Gateway
For a split second, the kid is in the hands of gravity, but you just know he’s going to be all right. Maybe it’s the matching pajamas that give it away. It’s Christmas morning, perhaps, and the kids want to play with a father, or an uncle. But what really seals the deal on the tone of the piece is the quality of the sunlight, streaming through the window behind them. It lets us see the care the adult is putting into it, lets us see the way the kid is enjoying the ride. He may be falling, but the landing will be safe.
Omni Hotel Workers Go On Strike
Over 120 housekeepers, front desk agents, cooks, and other employees at the Omni Hotel went on strike early Thursday morning, amid an ongoing contract fight over better pay, healthcare, and pensions. Those downtown hotel workers walked out of their jobs at 5 a.m. The Omni workers are represented by UNITE...
Early Voting, & Golf Carts
Miguel Pittman sat in one of two electric golf carts on an Orange Street sidewalk Wednesday afternoon — after casting an early ballot for his own bid to become Ward 3’s next alder, and as he prepared to drive back to the Hill in his campaign “eye catcher” of a vehicle.
Yale Cop Arrested, Placed On Paid Leave
A longtime Yale police officer and lieutenant was arrested last week and charged with assault in the second degree, after he allegedly hit his wife repeatedly with a weapon until she lost consciousness. That arrest and the events preceding it are described in an arrest warrant filed by Stratford Police...
Poultry Market Proposal Slaughtered
The Board of Zoning Appeals denied a proposed poultry market with on-site, on-demand chicken slaughtering on Tuesday night, following a stream of contentious public testimony that invoked concerns about Islamophobia, bird flu, and the wellbeing of the neighborhood. Milford-based entrepreneur Mirza Hafiz had planned to open a live poultry market...
Mystery (Train) Revisited
A subdued Mystery Train took off Tuesday from WNHH FM’s studio. Veteran blues performer Brandt Taylor offered that quiet, howling-at-the-moon, lament-evoking acoustic version of Paul Butterfield’s hard-driving electric “Mystery Train” during a live performance on WNHH FM’s “Acoustic Thursday” series (which occurred two days earlier than usually scheduled).

English Station Looms Over Fair Haven Walk
A derelict power plant. A neighborhood school. A vibrant community history of hardship and resilience. And the ticking clock of climate change. All these elements came together in the first of a series of walking tours — a collaboration among several public and nonprofit entities put together by Anstress Farwell, president of the New Haven Urban Design League — focusing on the decommissioned and toxic English Station power plant and the Mill River District in Fair Haven.

Student Proficiency Sees Slight Uptick
New Haven students are steadily making their way back to pre-pandemic proficiency rates, as newly received state assessment results for the 2023 – 24 school year show improved math, science, and English skills. New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Assistant Supt. Keisha Redd-Hannans presented that data to the Board of...
Tiny Shelter Resident Rejects Branford Move

Film Charts Hardship Of Being A Schizophrenic Brother’s Keeper
We first see Duane Luckow backlit. He’s filming himself with his phone. “Hey everybody, can you see me?” he asks. We can’t. But then he turns into the light, and there’s his face, looking concerned. “I’m going to give you a little tour of this place,” he says. He shows us a bedroom, clean, well-lit, and very institutional. There’s a teddy bear on the bed. “I’m not supposed to be filming this,” he says, but gives us a view out the window, of a courtyard garden. “That’s the only thing I have hope for,” he says, “that someday I’ll get out of this place.”
Yale Settles Fertility Pain Case
Yale has reached a settlement with 93 fertility clinic patients who received saline instead of fentanyl during excruciating and often traumatizing procedures. One of those patients, Soryorelis Henry, found herself “screaming and crying” in agony during an egg retrieval that was supposed to be pain-free — and heard the cries of other patients undergoing the same procedure from the waiting room.
