NEW IBERIA, La. ( KLFY ) – United States Senator Bill Cassidy traveled to Iberia Parish on Wednesday to speak at the New Iberia Rotary Club meeting.

A major topic of discussion was flood insurance rates and what is being done to help homeowners during this hurricane season. Senator Cassidy says one main focus this hurricane season is working on flood insurance reforms to be more transparent for Louisiana homeowners. “This is so the homeowner actually can make sense of why he’s being charged more than his neighbor down the street when their elevation is exactly the same.”

His team is working with FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program to help homeowners make sense of insurance rates increasing. The senator said, flood insurance is not as needed in other parts of the country as it is in Louisiana, making interest in purchasing insurance low. This causes rates to increase for people in Louisiana and makes people not want to invest. “There’s no easy answer, but we’ve been fighting for this for two years, and we’re not going to stop fighting until we get it fixed,” said Cassidy.

He explained how the bipartisan infrastructure bill is helping create ways for people to stay out the risk of flooding which helps lower monthly premium payments. “There has been hundreds of millions of dollars that have come from the infrastructure bill to help build flood control structures, to elevate homes, to clear out drainage, ditch ditches, to otherwise mitigate the coastal restoration, to mitigate the risk of flooding.”

Improving insurance rates is a long-term fix that is necessary for the country. Cassidy said it will pay dividends moving forward.
